Chatham County Schools Celebrates Student Achievements at Annual Science Fair
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PITTSBORO, NC — Chatham County Schools hosted its 2024-2025 District Science Fair on December 10 at Jordan Matthews High School. The event celebrated the hard work, creativity, and innovation of students from all grade levels, who showcased their science projects to peers, educators, and the community.
The evening began with a warm welcome from LaShonda Hester, Executive Director of Middle Grades Education, and an introduction by Dr. Anthony Jackson, Superintendent of Chatham County Schools. Students, parents, teachers, and community members gathered to recognize outstanding projects across multiple categories, from Biology to Technology, and divisions spanning kindergarten through 12th grade.
“This year’s Chatham County Schools Science Fair highlighted the incredible talents and curiosity of our students,” said Mrs. Hester. “Each year, our Chatham County Schools Science Fair gets better! Participation across the district grew this year, and we are proud to have had all grade levels represented and 100% participation from all schools. Our annual science fair is a special process and event that truly sparks interest and excitement among our future leaders. It also provides a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our future scientists. We are thankful for our students and their hard work, our staff, community partners who served as judges, and our parents. We are proud of all our students and wish the 1st place winners the very best as they move on to the NC Regional Science Fair to be held in February.”
Throughout the ceremony, students were recognized for their achievements. Among the highlights was the announcement of the Overall Winner, Embry Harrison from Margaret B. Pollard Middle School, whose project, “How Do Bees Survive Winter?” earned her the top honor and a $100 prize.
First-place winners in grades 3-12 will advance to the Regional Science Fair at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, scheduled for February 15, 2025. Categories such as Chemistry, Engineering, and Earth/Environmental Science featured innovative projects that showcased the students' problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
The success of the event was made possible through the collaboration of educators, parents, and community partners, including a dedicated team of 24 volunteer judges. Special thanks were extended to Ms. Sherri Homan, Instructional Program Facilitator, for her behind-the-scenes coordination, the district’s K-12 curriculum team and Jordan Matthews High School for hosting the event.
Chatham County Schools is proud to celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of its students and looks forward to their continued success at the regional and state levels.
