PITTSBORO, NC — Thirty-eight teachers in Chatham County Schools earned one of the three newly legislated bonuses this year on Tuesday, January 31. Session Law 2016-94, the 2016 Appropriations Act, authorized three bonuses for teachers based on student test results and earned certifications or credentials. The law stipulated a two-year pilot beginning with the 2016-17 school year. The bonus areas include third-grade teacher reading performance, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) and Industry certifications and credentials bonuses.
Bonuses were awarded in 2016-17 based upon 2015-16 performance outcomes. The law specifies that only teachers who remain employed in the qualifying teaching area are eligible. However, the Chatham County Schools Board of Education authorized the use of local funds to award bonuses to teachers who qualified, but are teaching in a new grade level or subject area within Chatham County Schools.
Teachers earning the third-grade bonus were recognized as being in the top 25 percent of teachers in either their district, the state or both based on student growth scores in reading. Teachers earned AP bonuses based on student performance on culminating exams. Finally, teachers in courses where completion could lead to an industry certification or credential for students were awarded a bonus based upon the number of students that successfully earned such a certification or credential.
The following is the complete listing of teachers in Chatham County Schools who earned a bonus in the pilot year of 2016-17:
