Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Students
The Chatham Central High School S4A CLUB (Students for Acceptance) sponsored a school-wide assembly welcoming Dr. Carolyn Happer, Meredith College Professor and historian, and Morris Glass, Holocaust survivor and author.
As co-author of the book Chosen for Destruction, Happer explained how she met Glass and collaborated with him to tell the untold story of the extermination of 90% of the Polish Jews during the Holocaust.
Glass spoke to the students explaining how he was placed in a Jewish ghetto in Poland at the age of 11 by the Nazis and was later transported to both Auschwitz Birdenau and Dachau camps. He was separated from his mother and sisters, never to see them again, and watched as the Nazis murdered his father.
His advice to students was to appreciate the freedoms they enjoy and be grateful to be American. He remained after the assembly to sign books and answer questions.
