Chatham Central Achieves Success at the National FFA Convention
CLouisville, KY November 2, 2015: The Chatham Central FFA Chapter recently competed at the 88th National FFA Convention. The convention was held in Louisville, Kentucky. Over 66,000 FFA members from all across the nation were in attendance.
The Chatham Central placed third nationally in the Floriculture Career Development Event. Team members include: (pictured left to right): Chris Hart (advisor), Katherine Miller, Lauren Webster, Nick Oldham, Rebecca Elixson. Katherine Miller was the 3rd high scoring individual in the nation. Nick Oldham placed 9th in the nation.
The purpose of the Floriculture Career Development Event is to stimulate the study of and interest in the production and retailing of plants and foliage. Through participation in this event, students will be able to identify floriculture and bedding plant materials as well as characteristics of unhealthy plants due to pest, nutritional, mechanical, or chemical injury. Students were also required to make various types of floral arrangements. Understanding principles and developing skills of floral design, identification of appropriate supplies and equipment for the flower shop and greenhouse, and demonstration of communication skills necessary for successful employment in the floriculture industry are skills attained in this event.
